Worst performing Nairobi MP unmasked
Embakasi East Member of Parliament John Ogutu Omondi has been accused of not developing his constituency, two years after he was elected in office.
The legislator who was ranked last in the recent performance poll by Infotrack is said to be one who only attends fundraisers and privately funded project launches within his constituency.
Residents say they have no idea where their Constituency Development Fund office is located and have not seen projects funded through the kitty.
A resident of Utawala estate in the constituency, who spoke to Nairobi News, said some of the projects done by the national government through the MPs office like the rehabilitation of Mihang’o and Utawala roads was poorly done.
“The contractor who was doing the roads did them in patches and did not even work on the drainage system along the roads. So when it rains it is almost impossible to drive on those roads,” said the resident.
CRIME-PRONE
Calls and text messages to the Embakasi East legislator for his response to the accusations levelled against him went unanswered.
A spot-check on a website that keeps track of all parliamentary appearances by legislators, mzalendo.com showed that the MP has only spoken seven times in parliament since he was elected, three of them in support of different motions moved on the floor of the house.
During the election period, Hon Omondi’s candidature was backed with a manifesto that was full of promises of how he would improve the constituency in all sectors.
The constituency that is home to dozens of industries has the highest rate of unemployment and to that the legislator had promised to engage industry owners to seek a solution.
The crime rate was to be lowered through engaging unemployed youths in activities around sports, arts and culture and working with security agencies to ensure security.
However, to date the constituency still tops the list of crime prone areas in Nairobi.
