Woman shot by Kamiti prison warders dies

The woman who was shot as warders hunted down three escaped prisoners from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison on May 23 has died.

Ms Elizabeth Wandahi, 45, passed on on Monday at 9am at Kenyatta National Hospital where she was admitted for about nine days.

She was shot three times in the left arm, while the fourth shot was lodged in her left thigh, damaging her bowel control.

It was this shot that claimed her life following an infection on the wound that hindered her blood from clotting.

Her sister, Mary Nyambura, was devastated by the death.

“She (Ms Wandahi) called one of our aunts and said she was bleeding a lot. She had been brought in from the theatre to treat the infection and see if they would dislodge the bullet. But she died three hours later,” Ms Nyambura said.

The manhunt for prisoners Joseph Kinyanjui, John Kamau Gathoni and Isaac Karanja Mwangi enters its 10th day Monday after they escaped on May 23 at around 1.30am by cutting grills during a power blackout that had engulfed the prison.

They used blankets and mosquito nets to climb down the high walls.
