Woman now cashes Sh90 billion divorce cheque

Sue Ann Arnall, the former wife of oil tycoon and CEO of Continental Resources Harold Hamm, has finally cashed her Sh90 billion ($974.8 million) divorce cheque, CNBC reports, citing “a source close to the call”.

Ms Arnall had rejected the handwritten cheque paid as a divorce settlement saying she wanted more. Hamm had agreed to pay the settlement back in November.

But when the oil magnate signed the multi-million shilling cheque and had it delivered to his ex-wife, she turned it down immediately.

She said the award of around Sh90 billion ($1 billion) in cash and assets was insufficient because her ex-husband would keep the lion’s share of a fortune valued at Sh1.6 trillion ($18 billion).

BENEFITS

Harold Hamm had already paid his former wife more than Sh1.8 billion ($20 million) during the divorce proceedings.

“Ms Arnall, through her counsel, stated that they were rejecting the… payment because Ms Arnall did not want to risk the dismissal of her appeal by acceptance of the benefits,” Hamm’s lawyer, Michael Burrage, said in an emailed statement.

But Hamm legal team claims he has lost Sh 1 trillion ($12 billion) tied to the value of his 68 per centstake in Continental in recent months, which his legal team blames on the sharp fall in oil prices.
