Woman arrested hours after giving birth and leaves infant in hospital

A woman was arrested a few hours after giving birth on Wednesday, leaving her infant in hospital.

And now her husband, Mr Joseph Irungu, has demanded a DNA on the baby, alleging the arrest was a plot by the police and hospital to swap the infant with another.

Mr Irungu said his wife, Monica Wamweru, gave birth to a baby girl on Tuesday at the Nyeri Referral Hospital at 2pm but on Wednesday morning, a police officer and her employer came to the hospital and arrested her for alleged theft.

STEALING SH90K

Talking to the media at the hospital after her ordeal, Ms Wamweru, who is an M-Pesa attendant in Nyeri town, said her employer accused her of stealing Sh90,000.

“On Monday I took all the money to our other office as usual before I went home,” she said as she wept.

“The cash that is supposed to be missing amounting to Sh59,000 is with my colleague, who has also confirmed receiving it,” she said.

Ms Wamweru said the nurses allowed the police officer to take her away, assuring her the baby would be fine.

HARASSED

She said she was taken to the station where she claims she was harassed.

An officer tried to push her into a cell but the station boss ordered her released.

This is after her husband and relatives stormed the station demanding her release.

Nyeri police boss Masai Makau said the matter is under investigation.

“Her employer misled the police,” he said and that investigations are on.
