Williamson changes Gor’s fortunes

Having endured relegation and three successive seasons of near misses, Gor Mahia have at long last secured the Kenya Premier League title with three games to spare.

The Green Army last won the title in 1995, captained by Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno, who has since turned into one of the club’s hate figures following his role in the Gor Mahia-Sony Sugar saga.

K’Ogalo’s 88 minute goal in their 1-0 win over Batoto ba Mungu on Wednesday night extended their unbeaten run over the team.

Head Coach Bobby Williamson will be happy with the feat, having joined the club mid-season following the sacking of Croatian Zdvarko Logarusic.

Danny Sserunkuma, who was in Williamson’s unwanted list at Uganda Cranes turned out to be the hero, thundering the title into Gor’s cabinet with his eighth goal of the season.

For the last three seasons, Gor has sniffed the title but had it snatched from their noses, most recently last year under Logarusic.

With K’Ogalo at the summit on the last day of the season with 58 points, a 1-1 draw with Thika United saw Tusker steal the title after hammering hapless Nairobi City Stars 3-0.

In 2011, the club finished fourth after leading the race for most of the season, following a string of eight draws.

The year 2010 was just as painful as last year, Gor Mahia lost to Ulinzi Stars on the last day of the league.
