Why Ruto’s aide was dropped from graft ‘charge sheet’
The office of Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has explained circumstances under which the name of Deputy President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet was dropped from a list of Kenyans who will face corruption charges over the Sh791 million National Youth Service scam.
There was hoo-ha on social media on Tuesday after the office posted a press release that had Mr Kibet’s name, only to withdraw it and post a new one without his name.
Now, the DPP’s office says the first list was erroneous. “ODPP wished to clarify that Mr Farouk Kibet was not one of the suspects directed by the Director of Public Prosecution to be charged. The error was noted and immediately corrected in a subsequent press release,” read a statement released by the office moments later.
“In relation to Mr Farouk Kibet, the DPP had directed the DCI to record witness statements and obtain bank documents in respect of his alleged receipt of Sh15. million to enable the DPP make an appropriate decision thereon. The ODPP re-affirms that its prosecutorial decisions are based on the law and evidence.”
