Why Ogopa sent artistes packing

Last month, Ogopa DJs refused to renew contracts for most of its artistes.

The label owners have been reluctant to discuss the issue but a source who requested anonymity told Off the Hook that the management had spent a lot of money on the artistes yet it was not getting good returns.

The label is now doing more videos which fetch good money.

One video from a Tanzanian artiste fetches between Sh500,000 and Sh1.5 million, a more lucrative venture than recording artistes for free, who are not creating hits for the studio, the source added.

The affected artistes include Mustapha, Kenzo, Marya and Trapee. Some of them have moved to The Main Switch studios, owned by ex-Ogopa DJs producer Philip Makanda.
