What we do and don’t know about the Garissa attack


What we know

1. At about 5.00 a.m. this morning an armed attack occurred at the Garissa University.

2. The attack was preceded by an explosion at the university gate.

3. The attackers then moved into a nearby girls hostel and took over.

4. KDF troops, who are stationed nearby, responded and took control of the situation.

5. KDF locked down the campus. Other institutions in Garissa Town have also been locked down.

6. Thirty casualties have been taken to hospital; four in critical condition. Majority of the casualties have gunshot wounds.

7. KDF has airlifted three casualties to Nairobi; two soldiers and one civilian.

8. Kenya Red Cross Emergency Medical Service team is leading the medical evacuation, working with Ministry of Health (MOH) to deploy surgeons to the ground.

9. KRCS are evacuating casualties from the site to the Garissa PGH Hospital.

10. The society is organizing for severe casualties to be airlifted to Nairobi.

11. KRCS are working with the MOH to organize a blood donation drive at Garissa PGH in support of those injured.

12. A tracing desk has been set up at the hospital; Phone number; 254 715 820 209. A psychosocial support desk has also been set up to assist victims and families.

13. Al Shabaab have claimed responsibility for the attack.

 

What we don’t know

1. It is still not clear how many people have been killed. CNN reports of eight deaths while Channel 4 talks of two.

2. We are unsure of the number of hostages still inside the campus.
