What to do with the Valentine’s hullaballoo

By ABIGAIL ARUNGA February 14th, 2014 2 min read

It is fortunate or unfortunate that this year’s Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday.  Fortunate for the ladies because they will be treated to romantic dinners and getaways but the men will not be as lucky as they will have to spend an extra dime on this day.

Most people assume that Valentine’s is for the ladies, which I think is ironical as it came about when a man died for love.

Be that as it may, Valentine’s is an opportune time to show how much you love someone, even though one should do it throughout the year.

Here are three options you can choose from this day, depending on what tickles your fancy.

So for those who are single, there are several parties like the Anti-Valentine’s’ party at Brew Bistro Bar and Lounge, or the Singles Party at Cubano with DJ Adrian.

One is uncertain whether they are meant to celebrate singlehood or to ensure that they are not single the next time the holiday rolls round.

A simple Valentine’s

Some people fancy a simple dinner and  drink. Not too much fuss, but still special and intimate.

To avoid embarrassment and last minute rush, book ahead to make sure you get a table at a restaurant, such as at the two I sampled: Bhandini and La Prugna D’Oro, both at Intercontinental. La Prugna only seats 50, so reservations need to be made early but the food is worth every penny. With courses titles ‘The Love Story of Eros and Psyche’ and ‘Triology of Aphrodite Last Kiss’, the meal is bound to set the mood.

Cost: Sh3,600 per person

An all-out Valentine’s

If you are going all out with your lady, then the place to be is Villa Rosa Kempinski. Located on Waiyaki Way, the hotel is the place to be this Valentine’s.

Villa Rosa’s Valentine package lasts the whole month, meaning that you have time to save and go at the end of the month.

This great package offers a night for two in a deluxe room, a bouquet of roses upon arrival, a candle-lit dinner for two in your room with a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and an hour long couple’s massage at the Kempinski Spa.

Add breakfast on the house after a special night and your love marathon is complete.

Kempinksi is also offering specials for February 14 and 15, both at their Nairobi branch and in the Mara.

Cost: Sh29, 909 inclusive of tax for two.
