What could be causing my car’s brakes to pulse?

Dear Neto,

I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Gallant. My brake pedal pulsates heavily when pressed. The effect can easily be felt on the car’s body. What could be causing this?

Orangi.

Dear Orangi,

Under heavy braking, it is possible to feel the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) pulsation at the pedal. Pulsation under normal braking could be an indication of unevenly tightened wheel nuts.

If you still experience pulsation even after tightening the wheel nuts, the brake discs could be warped. Warped discs are likely to have cracks on them and are not good for further use. Find a mechanic to check your wheel nuts, studs and discs if they are in good condition.

Warped discs can be resurfaced if they don’t have cracks though complete replacement is a better option.
