Network error stalls Westgate terror trial

The trial of four suspects held over the bombing of the the Westgate mall was adjourned on Thursday.

A network error on the prosecutor’s computer stalled proceedings.

The accused are on trial for the September 22, 2013 terrorist attack in which 67 people were killed.

The prosecution intended to use the computer to give evidence. A witness had already been sworn in to take the stand.

The prosecution had sought to stream live downloads of graphic pictures found in a laptop belonging to one of the suspects, who was arrested shortly after the raid.

RETRIEVED FILES

Mr Joseph Olum , a cybercrime expert at the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, who was stood down, said he received the laptop on October 1, 2013 for analysis.

He said he retrieved eight files from the laptop’s web history.

“There is a site on YouTube showing an Al-Shabaab member demonstrating to others how to assemble a firearm,” the police officer said.

The prosecutor Mungai Warui, then asked the witness to play the video, but it could only show a title “the daily life of a fighter.”

The hearing resumes Friday.
