Westgate: DNA testing delayed
Forensic investigation into the death of three people, suspected to have been part of the attackers, and whose remains were found buried in rubble at the Westgate Mall on Thursday failed to take place.
The investigation was to be carried out at the City Mortuary today (Friday), according to government pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor.
Speaking to NairobiNews on Thursday, Dr Oduor said experts and government officials found the remains of three bodies, each lying next to a gun at a badly destroyed corner of the mall.
He suspected that the bodies belonged to some of the terrorists who attacked and held Westgate for four days in an attack that shocked the world.
Dr Odour had said the investigation would take place from as 10.00 a.m. but by 3.00 p.m. it had not been done.
Locked refrigerator
“Some foreign investigators came and locked the fridge where the remains are kept and walked away,” said a source at the city morgue.
The investigation could reveal if indeed the bodies belong to the terrorists even as speculations are rife about the number who were involved in the incident.
Three AK 47 assault rifles were recovered alongside the remains on Thursday. It is suspected that these belonged to the terrorists.
Also, two G3 rifles and a rocket-propelled grenade were recovered at the scene during Thursday’s investigations.
