Water shortage hits Thika road estates

Estates adjacent to the Thika highway are grappling with an acute shortage water.

The shortage, which has dragged on for a week now, was caused by a broken line near the highway that supplies water to Kasarani and Roysambu constituencies.

Water vendors are making a kill from the shortage, selling a 20 litre jerrican of water at Sh 50.

Estates most affected include Zimmerman, Thome, Roysambu, Kasarani, Clay City, Ngumba, Githurai 44, and the area surrounding Kasarani stadium.

On Monday, residents were late for work as they set out to look for water. Some were seen buying the commodity along Kamiti road at 6.30 am.

“I leave the house at 6 am. But today, I have to leave past 7 am. I can’t leave the house without water and I have three young children,” said Isabella Owino, a Zimmerman resident.

Peter Njenga, 30, a resident at Safari Park View estate, says his house is  filthy.

“ I have not had water the whole week. Cockroaches have now invaded my kitchen.

“Yesterday I had to buy some two shirts and a trouser because I could not even hire someone to wash my clothes,” said Njenga.

A Corporate Affairs staffer at Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company confirmed they had received complaints about the water problem but could notcommit on when it will be rectified.

“What I know is that Roysambu and Thome estates had a problem last week but we are not sure it has spread to other estates,” said the official.

He referred us to his boss Mbaruk Vyakweli who was not reachable when we called him.
