Wanyama limps off with suspected hamstring injury

Southampton manager Ronald Koemen has described Victor Wanyama’s latest injury as “a pity”, while confirming the midfielder is set for a spell on the sidelines as a result of that setback.

The Harambee Stars midfielder went to the ground unchallenged moments before the interval during his side’s solitary goal win over Ipswich in a FA Cup replay on Wednesday evening with initial diagnosis pointing at a torn hamstring.

This development was later described by Koemen as “very unfortunate” during the post match media briefing, though the Dutch manager ruled out the possibility of heading to the transfer market in search of a stop gap replacement.

“It (the injury) is a pity” Koemen said.

The manager added: “The game plan was to field him for 45 minutes, then look, he goes down with less than two minutes to the break, we hope he will be available at the soonest opportunity but in the meantime, there are a couple of young players whom we believe can do a good job in his position”.

Harmstring injuries normally require a period of between 3-6 weeks to heal.
