Waiguru: Jubilee has lost the ground in Central Kenya

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has offered the biggest hint yet that she could decamp from Jubilee party ahead of the 2022 general elections.

During an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, the first-term governor said it would be difficult for her to win the same political seat on a Jubilee ticket if elections were held today.

She also called on the ruling party’s management to ‘look internally’ and come up with ways of revamping the outfit ahead of the next elections.

“If I ran today on a Jubilee ticket and someone else ran on a different party, even if people felt I’d performed, it would be hard to convince them to vote for me,” she added.

“It (Jubilee) needs to look internally at its issues in order to be acceptable to the people of Mt Kenya.”

The high-ranking politician, who is considered a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, also explained that people in Central Kenya are not satisfied with how the ruling party has been managed in the past five years.

When asked if United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a new outfit associated with Deputy President William Ruto, was an option should she decamp Jubilee, Waiguru remained coy, only stating that she was ‘exploring her options’.

Waiguru, who recently claimed she had been harrassed by Ethics and Anti Corruption (EACC) officials owing to her political stand, has been mentioned as a possible running mate for both Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
