Victoria Beckham falls in love with Ohangla music
There is some strange but nice that comes with the rhythm of this type of songs; that is how Victoria Beckham, the UNAids goodwill ambassador, has described Ohangla music.
Mrs Beckham, who is also a fashion designer, model, singer and wife to internationally renowned footballer David Beckham, spoke in Kisumu on Friday where she had gone to raise awareness on the need to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV.
“I really enjoy this type of music it has some kind of energy that accompanies it which is electric. The people who sing the tunes are also ever happy and that really elates me,” said Mrs Beckham.
The renowned celebrity also took time to dance and pose for photos with 50 children, born of parents living with HIV.
HIV TRANSMISSION
The children had been under the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV program for 18 months at the Kisumu County Hospital and Lumumba Health Centre but are now free from the virus.
During the event held at the Kisumu County Hospital, Mrs Beckham was entertained by Luo traditional dancers and occasionally stood up to join the performers in the dance trying to pull moves that go with the sweet rhythm.
Every speaker at the forum seemed moved by the tunes and demanded that the Ohangla music be played for a moment before they continued with their speeches.
The dancers, dressed in traditional regalia churned their tunes accompanied by keyboard and drums to the enjoyment of the guests. Mrs Beckham’s son Brooklyn and Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma’s wife, Olivia also joined the dance.
OHANGLA MUSIC
Ohangla is genre of music that popular among the Luo community with artistes such as Tony Nyadundo, Lady Maureen, Odos Jasuba, Boyeta wuod Awasi and Onyi Papa Jay the leading proponents.
Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma, who hosted Mrs Beckham, asked her to partner with the county government in establishing a talent centre to nurture the abilities and skills of the youth of Kisumu.
He said through art, many young men and women can grow, empower and generate income from themselves.
“The county has already set aside 10 acres of land in which a talent center can be established and more than 500 youth can be trained in art, fashion and design. I would love our visitor to partner with us and we shall name it Victoria Beckham Talent Academy,” said Mr Ranguma.
