Veteran footballers take Kadenge’s fundsdrive to social media

A team of former Kenyan football players have taken to social media to fundraise for Joe Kadenge’s medical expenses.

The team, led by former Kenya Breweries midfielder Sammy Shollei, has opened up a WhatsApp group specifically to solicit for funds.

Among those invited to the group are former and current players, coaches, football administrators, journalists and well wishers.

The message by Shollei on the group reads in part: “Team let us stand with Mzee Joe Kadenge who is currently admitted under serious conditions at Meridien Hospital in south B. Let us mobilise support and give back to this respected Mzee who made most of us who we are today, Spread the word.
We are asking for your support of ONLY Ksh 1,000.00, Send your contribution to mobile mumber – 0708 794747.”

The faling health of Joe Kadenge, considered Kenya’s finest football player ever following his splendid performances in the 70s and 80s, is now a source of concern to the public.

This year, the 78 year-old was hospitalised on more than three occasions for treatment.

The standout occasion was after he collapsed while watching football at the Camp Toyoyo grounds in August and had to be rushed to seek medical attention.
