Varsity students donate school uniform to pupils
One hundred children from Genesis Primary School had a reason to smile when they received school uniforms donated by University students courtesy of the Ficha Uchi campaign at the weekend.
This was the first roll out by the campaign, which is an initiative of university students hailing from Mathare slums.
The students partnered with local tailors and other volunteers to obtain the required fabric and make the uniform for the school children.
Announcing the campaign’s success, the students – through the Ficha Uchi Facebook page – said: “One hundred children from Genesis Primary School got uniform done by local volunteer tailors. The power of community mobilizing in using the resources available to us to achieve what we want done in our communities!”
MOTIVATIONAL TALKS
The university students and professionals also gave motivational talks to the Standard seven and eight pupils to encourage them to work hard.
Billian Okoth, who is among the Ficha Uchi founders, during an earlier interview said the noble campaign was initiated when a teacher asked him to help obtain school uniforms for some pupils in her school.

Okoth mobilized resources from young people in the area and they resolved to roll-out the campaign that intends to donate more school uniforms to pupils in schools within the area and eventually other slums in Nairobi.
Pupils in slum areas are often forced to attend school in tattered school uniform or in some cases even home clothes which greatly affects their self-esteem and academic performance.
