It’s up to varsities to sort out mess, says CS
Universities that have been hit by student unrest will have to deal with the issue since the government will not get involved.
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the universities have competent councils and senates that can handle the situation.
“We do not want to micro-manage public universities yet we have appointed people with competencies to lead them. We want them to remain independent,” said Dr Matiang’i.
However, he regretted the destruction of property in the universities saying this was unwarranted.
The CS has asked for reports from the universities. Four universities have been closed since January this year due to student unrest.
CLOSED UNIVERSITIES
Laikipia and Masinde Muliro universities were closed on Tuesday, University of Nairobi was shut last week while Chuka University closed early this year due to unrest.
Laikipia University students were protesting failure to register bio-chemistry and bio-medicine science courses with Kenya Medical Laboratory Technology.
At Masinde Muliro, the students protested a decision to bar some of their colleagues from sitting examinations because of fee balances.
Chaos at the University of Nairobi was due to disputed student union elections in which several students injured after clashes with the police.
Dr Matiang’i this week directed all universities to conduct biometric registration of students to tighten security there.
He also asked the Commission for University Education to ensure that universities capture biological details of students.
