Varisty students to protest over fee increment

Students from all public Universities will on Tuesday protest over what they term as ‘illegal’ fees increment by the government.

Last month, the Commission for University Education (CUE) indicated that the fees, which Education Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi described as “too low”, will be increased from September.

Students under the regular programme pay about Sh14,000 per semester. The government wants to increase this amount to Sh28,000.

In a press briefing on Monday, University of Nairobi chairman Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino, warned motorists to keep off roads that students will use to protest.

“We are advising all vehicles to keep off the roads that students will use,” said Mr. Ongili.

However, he insisted that Tuesday’s demonstrations will be peaceful

Maseno University secretary General Sammy Felix said that the poor people must be taken care of for they have the right.

“What will only make us stop this demonstration is when the fees has been reduced by half, increased HELB and grants be given to students,” said the Maseno Secretary General.
