USIU gets armed security after Garissa attack
The United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) has retained armed security after the devastating terrorist attack at Garissa University, following in the footsteps of Daystar University, another private institution of higher learning.
Edwin Wachie, USIU-A’s security officer said the institution has requested for armed guards to beef up security on campus since “terror threats by the Al-Shabaab on vital installations within the country is still on”.
“Since the provision of security is both private, individual and national government’s mandate, the government deployed a contingent of armed security personnel on campus,” said Mr Wachie in an emailed statement to students.
“In fact, the uniformed armed security personnel begun their patrols around other institutions of higher learning long before Garissa was hit, and will continue to patrol the same including USIU-A until further notice from relevant government authorities.”
SCREENING ENTRANCE
He urged students to reciprocate the “good gesture” and accord them a warm welcome.
Prof Freida A Brown, USIU’s Vice Chancellor, said the management would put additional measures in place for screening entrance into the university.
“In the upcoming semester (summer), we will be doing training and simulation drills for terror attacks, fire and bomb threats,” said Prof Brown.
“Finally, we will continue working closely with our local police and GSU to assure good response times in the event of an emergency.”
USIU is also offering counseling to students who might experience anxiety or stress related to recent events. “I remain ever committed to you,” said Prof Brown.
Daystar University has also enlisted the services of disciplined forces to fortify the university after the attack on Garissa University College by Al Shabaab militants, which left 148 people.
