US embassy to remain closed on Friday following shooting incident
The US embassy in Nairobi will be closed to public on Friday after a man who stabbed a General Service Unit (GSU) officer guarding the premises was shot dead on Thursday evening.
The embassy said routine consular services would been cancelled but emergency consular services for US citizens in Kenya would be available.
It further advised Americans in Kenya to review their “personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates”.
“Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security,” a statement from the embassy read in part.
ATTEMPTED TO GRAB FIREARM
In the Thursday incident, a middle-aged man was shot dead at the gate of the embassy after he stabbed the police officer before attempting to grab his firearm.
The attacker stabbed the GSU officer on the head and right hand before he was gunned down.
The man, dressed in a dark blue jeans and grey sweat shirt, pretended to be passing by the visa section gate when he attacked the officer.

Gigiri OCPD Vitalis Otieno said that the suspect hails from Wajir but could not give the names.
The investigations were taken over by five detectives from the Federal Bureau of Investigations who collected samples and exhibits, including his blood samples.
Detectives said the suspect had no mobile phone but had a Safaricom SIM card in his pocket.
