UoN hostel fire destroys students’ belongings

Property of unknown value belonging to University of Nairobi students was destroyed by a fire that started minutes before the expiry of the 5pm ultimatum for students to vacate the institution.

According to a police report filed by the University’s Deputy Director of Security David Kimani Miteka at Kileleshwa Police Station, the fire started at around 4:45pm.

“At around 4.45pm, fire started at Room 23, Prefab B6. The fire spread very fast and completely burnt the hostel. Inside the hostel were student belonging. Police officers who visited the scene said that no student was injured as they had already left,” read the report in part.

CAUSE UNKNOWN

According to the police report, the cause of fire is still unknown but it is suspected to have been started by a group of student who sneaked into the hostels.

The university was closed indefinitely by a special senate meeting that met on Tuesday.

All students were asked to vacate the premise by 5pm Tuesday including those in Nairobi and Mombasa campuses.

The decision was arrived at after four days of unrest following the students’ union elections that were held on Friday that saw Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino re-elected as chairman.

Students went on the rampage and on Monday they burnt down the union offices protesting Babu’s re-election.
