UoN student stabbed in election fracas

A male student was on Thursday stabbed at the University of Nairobi during an exercise to elect the lead commissioner who will oversee the upcoming students’ elections.

Calphord Odhiambo was stabbed in the stomach by people said to have been hired to frustrate the election process.

Odhiambo, who is also running for the Secretary General position under the camp of chairman aspirant Dennis Njeru, was rushed to MP Shah Hospital.

BABU DENIES ROLE

Current SONU chairman Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino, who is seeking to retain the seat, distanced himself from the incident, stating that as the incumbent he is advocating for a peaceful election.

“This was the election of the lead commissioner and had nothing to do with me. I actually stepped in to ensure peace and calm since as the chairman I should be the unifying factor,” he said.

The attackers are said to have been about 15 in number and were composed of suspended students from different UoN’s campuses.

They reportedly came to the election venue at the University’s main campus intoxicated and carrying bottles of liquor.

They attacked Mr Odhiambo after the aspirants had disagreed on the commissioners who will oversee the elections.

BROKEN BOTTLE

An eyewitness disclosed to Nairobi News that one of the attackers broke an empty bottle of alcohol, approached Mr Odhiambo and stabbed him in the stomach.

The University’s administration has confirmed the incident, adding that Mr Odhiambo is now in a stable condition at the hospital.

Central OCPD Paul Wanjama on Friday told Nairobi News that the incident was not reported at the station.
