Former UoN student and politician killed in ugly clash with armed goons
A politician who contested the Milimani ward seat as an independent candidate in 2017 was on Thursday night shot dead by goons at Club 36 market located opposite Nairobi Primary School.
Samuel Ragira alias OCS Ragira is reported to have met his death when he confronted the said goons who had been terrorising traders at the “Klabu” market demanding money in exchange for stalls.
Nairobi News has learnt that for the last one week, the goons said to be armed with guns and an assortment of crude weapons have been demanding payment from the traders in order for them to go on with their activities.
“They ask for money according to the size of the land that you are running your business on. The amount ranges from Sh10,000 to Sh200,000,” a trader who requested for anonymity told Nairobi News.
BRANDISHING PISTOLS
The trader further claimed that they have been operating in fear as the armed and ruthless youth have been threatening them and at times even brandishing pistols to scare them into submission.
“It has been a nasty scene, things not have been good here and nobody has been coming out to assist us,” another trader who spoke in confidence said.
The traders said that they wanted to find out who the armed goons were.
“If we are here illegally then it would have been good if they told us to go away without the unnecessary exchanges. We also want to be told who are the goons since they have been threatening us with guns,” said the source.
Mr Ragira, said to be a former University of Nairobi student, has been opposing the goons’ activities on social media until Thursday night when he stormed the area in solidarity with the traders.
Sources told Nairobi News that it is during the ugly confrontation that one of the irate youth allegedly shot Mr Ragira, killing him on the spot.
COLLECTED BODY
By 8pm on Thursday, police officers had already collected his body from the scene and taken it to the City Mortuary.
It is unclear why the said parcel of land that is located a short distance from State House has been of interest. But Nairobi News understands that most students prefer buying and having their meals from the traders in the market.
On Wednesday, Mr Ragira sensationally claimed that Klabu traders were being attacked by “mungiki.”
He went ahead to allege this was happening under the watch of the police.
“Students are being harassed and beaten as the police watch. We want to know why the police can side with people terrorising innocent Kenyans,” he posted on his Facebook page, adding that he was personally threatened by a panga.
By 9pm on Thursday, students from the University of Nairobi had camped at the City Mortuary where his body was taken and condemned the murder of Mr Ragira who is associated with the university.
Mr Geoffrey Mosiria, a former sports representative at the University asked the police to speed up their investigation into his death.
“We want the police to tell us who shot Mr Ragira and why did they do that,” said Mr Mosiria.
POLICE ON IT
Kilimani OCPD Michael Muchiri had earlier on, before the murder, told Nairobi News that he was aware of the saga and that the police were on it.
“They are goons and we already have a plan on how we shall deal with the matter,” he said.
Early this week, a senior police officer visited the scene and was beaten up by the goons who broke his leg.
Nairobi News has learnt that he has since taken an off and is nursing his injuries at home.
Mr Ragira contested the Milimani ward seat on an independent ticket but lost to Moses Ogeto of ODM.
He leaves behind a wife and a daughter.
