Unmasking MPs: Parliament to post legislators’ CVs online

New MPs are on Tuesday expected to present their CVs to Parliament clerks in a move aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability to the public.

Parliament seeks to create a database of the lawmakers’ personal details and academic qualifications, which will then be uploaded on the Parliament website.

“As part of accountability to the public, their bio data will be captured on the day of orientation and will be posted on the website so that no one will have issues knowing our leaders,” National Assembly Clerk Michael Sialai had said in May.

The MPs had earlier this year agreed to suspend the requirement until after the August 8 General Election, when all members would be required to have a degree.

Following the amendment of the election law, if a by-election occurs in the Senate or the National Assembly, all aspirants would be required to have a degree from a recognised university.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

In addition, the lawmakers are required to take along their national IDs and a certificate from the returning officer that declared them the winner.

In the past, MPs were only required to present their information to the Parliamentary Service Commission’s human resource department.

The new MPs will go through orientation today ahead of their swearing in on Thursday.

Meanwhile, lobbying for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker posts in both Houses is underway with aspirants collecting signatures to support their bids.

Kuresoi South MP-elect Moses Cheboi had by Monday evening collected 105 signatures from MPs in his bid for the deputy Speaker post.

Murang’a Senator-elect Irungu Kang’ata returned his application on Monday, joining his colleagues Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu) and Susan Kihika (Nakuru) in the Senate Speaker race.
