10 university students arrested in demo over delayed Helb loans

Ten university students were on Tuesday arrested during a protest on the delayed disbursement of Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) loans.

Central OCPD Paul Wanjama said the suspects would be charged in court for engaging in an unlawful demonstration and destruction of property.

The students claim that Helb chief executive Aaron Theophilius has been out of the country and this could be the possible cause of the delay.

But Helb called for calm among students, saying the disbursement was underway.

University students admitted through the regular programme rely on Helb loans to pay for their school fees and upkeep.

Tuesday’s demo started off along Haile Selassie Avenue and wound up at the University of Nairobi. The students then walked to Anniversary Towers to seek audience with Helb Officials.
