Unep employee freed on bond in ex-lover assault case

A Nairobi court has released a United Nations Environmental Programme (Unep) employee charged with causing grievous harm to his Kenyan ex-lover.

Alphonse Kambu, a citizen of Papua New Guinea, was released on a sh10 million bond and also ordered to pay a cash bail of sh2 million pending the hearing of the case next year.

He is required to secure a Kenyan surety for the bond terms, chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo ruled.

The suspect has also been warned to desist from contacting his ex-lover Ruth Gakii.

The magistrate dismissed an application by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to have the suspect in custody till his case is heard and determined.
