Umoja residents finally receive land leases

A section of Umoja residents breathed a sigh of relief  on Wednesday after finally receiving leasehold agreements to pieces of land issued to them by the defunct Nairobi City Council over 30 years ago.

This comes after Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero presented about 4,000 lease deeds to the residents at Redeemed Gospel Church in Umoja I.

The governor said that the residents had been allocated the pieces of land under a scheme that covered Umoja I, Umoja II and Umoja Inner Core by the defunct council in the 1970s and since then the residents had not received their title deeds.

“We started this process three years ago as most of them had waited for 30 years to get titles for land allocated to them and the people have never had the leases. For this particular scheme we have already prepared about 4,000 leases and today we were giving part of them,” said Dr Kidero.

Dr Kidero said the scheme has more than 8,000 leases and the county had already prepared 4,000 lease deeds and that they were also working on 1,000 more.
