Residents angered by poor medical waste disposal

By HILARY KIMUYU September 9th, 2015 1 min read

How can a public health center discard and expose the public to the very same health risks that they are meant to prevent or provide a remedy for?

This is the question residents of Umoja 1 have been asking since Sunday morning after they were confronted by the disturbing site of burnt laboratory test tubes with blood samples right outside Umoja 1 Heath Center.

The half test tubes containing human blood samples were scattered near the road opposite Umoja Catholic Church.

Now most residents are demanding answers from the institution for their recklessness.

“We are surprised that the health centre chose not to use the right way to dispose off medical waste. It is only fortunate that it wasn’t a school day, otherwise school children would have been exposed to health hazard from the discarded equipment,” a resident Mary Okello said.

Most of the area residents who spoke to Nairobi News were in agreement that there is need for proper disposal mechanism by health centres operating in residential areas.
