Umoja matatu sacco grounds fleet over corruption claims

Owners of public service vehicles working under the Utimo matatu Sacco on Monday withdrew their vehicles from the road over alleged corruption.

The fleet which operates in the Umoja and town centre route was grounded on Monday morning.

The owners claim officials at the Ethics Commission for Cooperative Societies (ECCOS) had colluded with former sacco officials to withdraw substantial amounts from the sacco’s bank account.

The peaceful protest saw all the sacco’s vehicles assemble at Donholm and then proceed in a convoy to the commission’s head office.

Sacco secretary Sammy Maina told Nairobi News, that the protest is meant to compel the commission to call for an election.

“In the past few years there has been different searches coming from this office without holding any election,” Mr Maina added.

Last week, the sacco’s fomer officials managed to change names of elected leaders and withdrew some money from the sacco’s accounts.

Nairobi News has since learnt that the  protest bore fruits after the commission issued the sacco with a letter to hold an Annual General Meeting in the next 15 days. All the bank accounts will be frozen until new officials are elected.
