Umoinner passengers escape tragedy by a whisker

Passengers aboard an Umoinner Sacco matatu narrowly escaped being hit by a train on Thursday evening at Mutindwa market.

They frantically escaped through the windows when the vehicle’s engine stalled while they were on  the railway.

Traders in the area were forced to push the vehicle from the tracks as the Dandora bound train approached the railway crossing.

According to witnesses, the matatu driver was driving on the wrong side of the road when its engine shut down.

“No police officer was in sight and they were only alerted by screams and cries of the passengers,” said Joshua Mutuko, a trader.

A report at Buruburu police station showed that Mr Samuel Tora, the driver, was arrested due to overlapping.

Mr Christopher Muiya, Umoinner chairman said the driver has been dismissed from duty following the offence.

“We let Mr Tora go because we have to assure our customers that we care about their safety and are keen on obeying traffic rules,” he said.

Last year, 12 people died at the Mutindwa intersection when a train rammed an Umoinner matatu.
