Uhuru’s visit to Kibera cancelled
The much anticipated visit by the President to Kibera on Friday was cancelled at the eleventh hour.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was expected to issue a communal title deed to the Nubian Community through the Nubian Council of Elders.
Without giving reason Mr Jaffer Ahmed Musa, Assistant Secretary General of the Kenyan Nubian Council of Elders said the event had been cancelled till a date that will be announced later.
In an earlier phone conversation, Nubian Council of Elders Chairman Issa Faraj had denied any knowledge of the Head of State’s visit.
“I’m not aware the President was supposed to come and issue the title deed although it could be ready by now,” he said.
The government is to allocate the Nubian community 288 acres of Kibra land. Experts fear the move could ignite land politics and conflicts in the cosmopolitan area.
A group of Kibera residents demonstrated to the Ministry of Lands last week following reports of the title deed.
“Nubians will not rest until they recover 4197.9 acres of the Kibra land which they inherited from their forefathers,” said Mr Faraj.
He said their aim was to develop the land and that nobody will be evicted.
“We will engage the government in constructive discussions in pursuit of the remaining piece of land,” he said.
Mr Faraj said the land covers Makina and central part of Kibra to the Nairobi Dam.
