Uhuru to commission Expressway in April 2022

President Uhuru Kenyatta will officially commission the Nairobi Expressway in April of 2022, three months before he retires.

Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) James Macharia made the announcement on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, when he visited the site to assess the construction.

The CS also announced that the road is 60% complete.

“Test runs on the road will take place in March (2022) next year as we are confident the contractors will have completed all works by February, ” he said.

The project, Macharia added, will be completed in two years instead of the earlier agreed time frame of four years.

“We shortened the project from four years to two years and the contractors work 24 hours to meet that target.”

The Nairobi Expressway Project is a 27.1km road project which begins in Mlolongo via the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Nairobi’s CBD and ends at Westland’s area along Waiyaki Way.

The Expressway consists a four-lane and six-lane dual carriageway, which is elevated in some areas and includes 10 interchanges and is expected to cut traffic time between the route from one hour to about 20 minutes.
