Uhuru, Raila: Why we are proud of Team Kenya

President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Sunday led other Kenyans in congratulating Team Kenya’s outstanding performance at the just concluded IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.

Also to hail the team were Deputy President William Ruto and cabinet secretary for internal security Joseph Nkaissery.

For the first time, Kenya topped the medal standing at the World Championships, beating heavyweights Jamaica and United States of America. Kenya hauled a total of 16 medals (7 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze).

The President said the athletes have proved to the world that they have the talent, discipline, determination, teamwork and vision to successfully compete at the highest level.

“Our young people have once again shown that they are as good as the world’s best and brightest,” President Kenyatta said.

HOT BED OF CHAMPIONS

The President added on his Twitter handle: “We are World Champions…The Glory of Kenya, the fruit of our labour- My Standing Ovation for #TeamKenya #HotbedOfChampions #Beijing2015.”

Odinga said that Kenya’s remarkable run has opened a new chapter in athletics history books by emerging on top of the world.

“It has been so much fun watching these young, extremely talented and determined Kenyans take every step, contest by contest, to put us on top of the world, literally,” Odinga said.

Ruto said the athletes have been great ambassadors who should be emulated and envied as well.

“We are greatly indebted to every athlete. It is not possible to put a price on the goodwill and visibility your victories bring to this nation,” Ruto sad.
