Uhuru, Raila condole with families of students killed in school fire

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nasa leader Raila Odinga are among the leaders who have condoled with the families of students who lost their lives in a dormitory at Moi Girls School Nairobi.

Seven students died at the inferno in one of the dormitories on early on Saturday morning while several have been admitted to hospital with burn wounds.

“I was deeply saddened and pained by news of last night’s fire at Moi Girls’ School, Nairobi. The families affected, as well as the school and all who wish it well, can be sure that we will investigate the matter fully, and act appropriately so that this sort of tragedy doesn’t recur. We need to protect our sons and daughters, and we will.” President Kenyatta said in post on his Facebook page.

Mr Odinga, who visited the school on Saturday morning, in his part termed the loss of seven young lives as a big blow to the country.

He pledged to support the affected families as well as the school administration.

“We pray for the families, who must be struggling for answers at this moment. We also stand with the fraternity of the school, including students, workers, teachers, and parents for what they are going through at this moment,” Mr Odinga said.

INVESTIGATIONS

“It is our hope that the government will quickly conduct investigations and share findings with the public on the cause of the fire as that will be critical in helping the parents and students cope with the loss,” he added.

Deputy President William Ruto also took to social media to condole with the affected families and the school.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Women’s Hospital CEO, Felix Wanjala, has confirmed that 51 casualties from the incident were take to the facility on Saturday at 2am. Of that number, 40 have been discharged while 10 are still admitted.

One with 66 per cent burns has been referred to Getrudes Hospital,  two are admitted with over 50 percent burns while 8 other with minor burns are under observations.
