Uhuru ignores Kenya’s best brains, confers top awards on Chinese

President Uhuru Kenyatta awarded Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) to five Chinese nationals as his last order conferment in his first term of presidency.

The five include Chinese ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa, and his predecessor Liu Guangyuan, China Communications Construction Company Limited Vice Chairman Chen Fenjian, Chen Yun and Zhang Min.

Notably, the president didn’t confer awards to any of the 50 specialists who in November 2016 conducted a 23-hour surgery and successfully separated conjoined twins at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

“The surgery is a continental first; and given the fact that it was conducted at the KNH Main Theater, it is testimony of the vast improvement in the quality and capacity of Kenya’s public hospitals,” the president said at the time in his congratulatory message after the landmark operation.

The conferment of the third highest award to Chinese nationals immediately caused online jitters.

The MBS award was also given to other nine Kenyans among them Kenya’s ambassador to South Sudan Cleland Leshore and Ambasador Josphat Kaunda Maikara based in Somalia.

MBS is the third class award conferred by the Head of State during national holidays to people in recognition of their service to the nation.

The Madaraka Day being the last national holiday in President Kenyatta’s first term saw the third class award given to five Chinese nationals among other Kenyans who have served the country.
