Rogue Uber driver throws out city mum and her school going daughter

A woman has recounted how she was harassed by a taxi driver on Thursday morning following a disagreement between them.

Mary Gichuki, who lives at Kinoo, claims that she called for an Uber at 8:06am so as to take her five year old daughter to school.

She called in a few minutes later to check where the driver had reached and also to give him directions to the exact pick up point.

When the taxi man finally arrived she rushed to get inside the car together with her daughter, occupying the back seats. That is when argument broke out between her and the taxi driver.

The driver started lecturing her on how she was rude. As the altercation escalated, the driver told her that he would cancel the ride.

SHOCKED

“I was so shocked at how the man was talking to me and as if that was not enough, he demanded that I pay him after he cancelled the ride, when he had not yet taken me anywhere,” said Ms Gichuki.

After she refused to pay up, the driver, who was identified as Mr Thairu by the Uber app, got out of the car and headed over to the left back seat door, opened it and grabbed Ms Gichuki’s left arm and removed her out of the vehicle.

“I have scheduled a doctor’s appointment just to make sure everything is okay because I am experiencing some pains, but I thank God that my daughter was not injured during the whole ordeal,” Ms Gichuki said.

When reached for comments by Nairobi News, Uber management acknowledged receiving the complaints from the aggrieved customer.

“We are aware of the incident that took place on Thursday morning between an Uber driver and a client. We are deeply committed to the safety of everyone who uses the Uber app. And we have launched an investigation into the matter. While this is going on the driver will be prevented from accessing the app until investigations are complete,” said Janet Kemboi, the Communications Associate for Uber East Africa.
