Fraudsters in court over fake parking receipts


Two suspected con men have been fleecing motorists in a fake parking fee scam. Police say the pair have been charged with conspiring to defraud Nairobi County Government by printing fake car park receipts.

Stephen Kamau Kariuki and Kelvin Deva Karanja allegedly posed as County  car park attendants and would present daily car park tickets to unsuspecting motorists, the prosecution said.

They appeared before Principal Magistrate A Opondo on Friday  and also faced a charge of being in possession of a seal machine.

The Court was told that on diverse dates between November 1, 2013 and January 30, 2014; at Kenda House they conspired to defraud County Hall of Sh140,000 by printing 1,000 daily car park receipts purported to be genuine receipts of the County Government.

The sealing machine was purported  to be genuine from the Institute of  Management of Information Systems — an institution based in the  United Kingdom, the court heard.The suspects will pay Sh500,000 cash bail, pending trial on February 24.
