Two Kenyans in Appstar Challenge final

Two Kenyans are among eight finalists of The Appstar Challenge featuring individuals from select countries in Africa and Asia.

Soccer story by Kevin Oti is an app designed to help a football manager move a team from the lower leagues to the national leagues, while Joe Njeru’s Automsgs is an SMS scheduler app.

The latter allows automatic sending of messages on pre-scheduled dates.

The Appstar Challenge is a partnership between Safaricom and Vodafone designed to give support to mobile app developers in emerging markets.

This year marked the second edition of the challenge.

The Appstar Challenge winner will be announced on Wednesday and win $12,000. The second and third runners up will walk away with $6,000 and $4,000 respectively.

2,200 apps developers registered for the competition this year.  1,070 were developed and eight apps made it to the finals.

“Safaricom looks at this and other similar competitions as milestones towards creating a vibrant Apps development economy aimed at providing thousands of jobs to the youth,” said Safaricom’s Chief Executive Officer, Bob Collymore in a statement.
