Two fined Sh63 million or life in prison for illegal possession of ivory


Two men have been fined a total of Sh63 million for being in illegal possession of three kilogrammes of ivory.

Wilson Kiyayooni appeared before Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Allan Sitati and was fined Sh40 million or serve life imprisonment in default for illegally being in possession of an elephant tusk weighing 3kg.

He, alongside a boy (aged less than eighteen years – name withheld) was arrested at Emuria Dikir area in Narok County while in possession of the contraband ivory. The minor was released by the court.

In Laikipia, a 31-year-old man who pleaded guilty to selling elephant tusks was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Nyahururu court.

PLEADED GUILTY

Mr James Ewoi, pleaded guilty to two counts of being in possession of three pieces of elephant tusks and illegally trading game trophies before Principal Magistrate Peter Ndege.

The magistrate fined him a fine of Sh 3 million or in default serves six months imprisonment for being in possession of the game trophies and Sh20 million or life imprisonment for illegally trading game trophies.

He was charged that on March 13, this year at ADC Mutara ranch in Laikipia County, he was found in possession of three pieces of elephant tusks weighing 3kg, with an estimated street value of Sh1.3 million without a permit from the Director of KWS.
