Twins kidnap accused seeks reduced bond
A former police officer charged in connection with the kidnapping of 15-year-old twins now wants a court to reduce his bond terms on grounds that he hails from a poor background.
The abductors had demanded Sh86 million in ransom.
Mr Joash Opiyo Jagero, who was dismissed from the Administration Police after he was linked to the theft of Sh80 million from a bank, has been charged on suspicion that he had been involved in the kidnapping of the twin sisters.
He was granted a Sh4 million bond, which he wants reduced to Sh500,000.
He was arrested after police conducted a rescue operation at Tajiri Estate in Matasia, Nairobi, which freed the girls after an 11-day ordeal.
The victims (names withheld), were kidnapped as they were going to school in Ruiru and their captors demanded the ransom from the father, Mr Tinu Mahajan, of the Mada Hotels chain.
Mr Jagero faces charges alongside eight other accused, who were also arrested in Matasia.
They were required to deposit bonds of Sh4 million to secure their freedom. The twins were kidnapped along Grivellia Groove at Brookside, Westlands on October 3.
Nairobi chief magistrate Kiarie Waweru Kiarie ordered a pre-bail report before ruling on the request.
