Noose tightens around Justice Tunoi’s neck

Pressure on embattled Supreme Court judge Justice Philip Tunoi continued to mount on Friday after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) established that he inappropriately engaged in misconduct and recommended that he should face a tribunal.

The special committee of the JSC found that there was evidence that judge had misappropriate contact with people involved in the Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero’s election petition.

“The Commission is satisfied that a Prima Facie case of gross misconduct and misbehaviour has been disclosed against the Hon Mr Justice Philip Tunoi,” said Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.

“The JSC shall therefore recommend to his Excellency the president that a tribunal established to investigate the matter.”

Justice Tunoi is accused in an affidavit given to Dr Mutunga of taking a bribe of Sh200 million from Dr Kidero to rule in his favour. He has denied the allegations.
