Tragedy as female teacher commits suicide in lodging after visiting husband

Police in Kitui are investigating the circumstances in which a female secondary school teacher committed suicide inside a guest house, while traveling home.

The body of Jackline Mwikya, an English teacher at St Lukes Boys’ Secondary School in Lower Yatta district, was found dangling from the roof of a lodging at Kanyonyoo market along the Thika – Garissa highway.

Lower Yatta OCPD Patrick Makokha said Mwikya, 41, had visited her husband in Nairobi during the school mid-term break, but left without informing anyone where she was heading to.

The police divisional head said detectives collected a supposed suicide note with only two telephone numbers which were later found to belong to her husband.

“We also found a bus ticket showing she had traveled from Nairobi that same day and alighted at Kanyonyoo market where she went straight to the guest house” Mr Makokha said.

The OCPD said it seems her motive of leaving the telephone numbers may have been to get identified easily, but it is not clear where she was headed to.

“We have asked the husband to record statement with us in order to establish what happened and why she resorted to taking her own life” he said.
