Traffic cameras launch in December

By NAIROBI NEWS November 15th, 2013 1 min read

The new traffic lights in Nairobi fitted with cameras to help nab offenders will be launched in December, Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke has said.

Mr Mueke said bus termini would also be gazetted to prevent public service vehicles picking up and dropping passengers anywhere, leading to traffic jams and congestion.

Speaking by telephone on Thursday, Mr Mueke said after the launch, traffic police would not be require to control motorists in the city.

“We are waiting for completion of the automated system that will be able to take pictures and synchronise traffic lights at junctions,” Mr Mueke said.

Decongest city

He said the automated traffic lights and cameras would help decongest the city.

Already, the government has adopted closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to tackle the rising cases of insecurity in Nairobi streets.

Kenya Data Networks has set up cameras in locations covered by its terrestrial fibre-optic network. The images are relayed back to KDN controllers, then to the police headquarters.
