Traders protest against rise in market fee

Traders of fresh produce on Monday held protests outside City Hall to protest against a raise of market fees by the county government.

Carrying their merchandise and placards, the group marched from their various markets chanting slogans demanding a meeting with Governor Evans Kidero.

In the new rates, traders who sell goods displayed on the market floor will pay sh50, up from sh25.

The new rates are part of the Nairobi City County Finance Act gazette by the governor last year.

According to the traders, the new fees are oppressive and were arrived at without their input.

“They are applying double taxation on us and that is why we are requesting an urgent meeting with the governor to iron out any misunderstanding,” said Nelson Githaiga, chairman Muthurwa Traders Association.
