TNA senator arrested in drink driving crackdown

A nominated senator was among 40 people arrested by police at the weekend for driving while drunk.

Senator Joy Gwendo (TNA) spent the night in Muthaiga police station cells after she failed an Alcoblow test.

It is said that the senator was driving to her home in Muthaiga in the company of another woman when she was flagged down by traffic and National Transport and Safety Authority officers at around 1am on Sunday.

Her car was later picked up by an aide.

Ms Gwendo was released on Sunday morning after paying a Sh10, 000 cash bail. She is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Outgoing traffic commandant Samuel Kimaru refused to comment on the matter, saying that he was not aware of the arrest.

“Kindly visit the station to confirm on the story because I am not aware of the matter,” he said.

In January a High Court judge was allowed to go scot free after being stopped for the alcohol test, where he was found to be over the limit.

The judge was arrested at a check point on Ngong Road as he drove towards Karen shortly before midnight.

“We have arrested very senior people because we are not discriminatory. All are equal before the law. Anyone who exceeds the legal amount and drives must face the law,” Kimaru was quoted as saying at the time.
