Why Timothy Njoya wants the media to stop using this iconic picture

By EDDY KAGERA September 15th, 2017 1 min read

Second liberation hero and controversial cleric Timothy Njoya has told media houses to stop using an image of him being clobbered by police officers and Kanu goons in the 90s.

The iconic picture shows the Presbyterian Church of East Africa Reverend Dr Timothy Njoya near Parliament buildings, Nairobi on June 10, 1999 where he was beaten during a demonstration to press for constitutional reforms.

The episode, which was also caught on video, shows several uniformed and plain clothes officers descend on Dr Njoya with clubs for a few minutes while he wrings on the ground begging for his life.

While this has been used to show Kenya’s struggle for liberation, the subject now says it’s time the media stopped using the picture.

He argues that his life is a journey that should not be defined by a single episode.
