Three women, one child killed in Kibera fire

Three women and a child were burnt to death when fire gutted down several shanties at the Kibera slums in Nairobi in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

The four were burnt as they slept in their house in Gatwikira in Kibera when fire broke down at around 1:20 a.m.

The child, eight year old Elvis Ocholi, was the son of Margaret Nyakowa who also died in the inferno.

Others who died have been identified as Belinda Awuor and Linet.

Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam said six other people who were burnt during the incident have been admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

“A total of 15 houses were burnt. We still do not know the cause of the fire” Mr Katam said.

It took three hours for the residents to put off the fire using water.

Fire engines could not make it to the village located in the middle of the slums because there is no access road due to the congestion of the houses.

“Even police vehicles could not manage to the scene. Police had to trek and it was really hard for us to control the crowd” Mr Katam said.

The remains of the four were taken to the city mortuary.
