Thirsty Komarock residents protest over lack of water for six months

Residents of Komarock estate in Nairobi took to the streets on Saturday afternoon to demonstrate the lack of water in the area.

The residents claim they have not been supplied with the vital commodity for the last six months.

The stormed the Nairobi Water Company offices in Kayole to demand answers for the unequal distribution of water yet their Kayole neighbours have water.

Florence Kanyua, a resident, said she receives water bill every month yet her taps have been dry.

“Every Kenyan has a right to clean water, sanitation and good health care and we are here to demand for that right,” she said.

An engineer with the water company in Kayole told the protesting residents that the company will come up with a better way to make sure that the residents get water.

PIPE ROUTE

“We have a challenge because the pipe that is supposed to supply Komarock residents with water, first has to go through Kayole and then to Komarock, but with the rationing it is difficult. We are going to look at ways to connect Komarock residents with the pipe that passes through Kangundo road,” said Moses Wachira.

The Nairobi Water Company started rationing water in the city at the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, car wash owners have opposed the proposed shutdown of their businesses as a way of preserving the dwindling water reserves .

They said they cannot close their business
because it is their only main income source.
